horns

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of checking out OPHELIA’S  for the first time, and I have to say that it’s my new absolute favorite venue in Denver. It’s sophisticated, intimate, and a refreshing change from the average bar or concert venue. Next Friday night, NOCTURNE ENTERTAINMENT and Ophelia’s will be hosting one of Denver’s most eclectic local bands TNERTLE, an electro/funk/hip hop group who you absolutely need to have on your radar. I’ve seen them a couple times, once with the infamous SUNSQUABI boys, and again at THE BIG WONDERFUL last summer. What continues to draw me to their shows is the sheer amount of fun and energy that they bring to each performance. I also find their female horn section particularly badass. Their funky instrumentals add the perfect amount of contrast to the group’s electronic undertones, making their sound all the more appealing and infectious. Their most recent album MataMata released by SUPER BEST RECORDS features the one and only MICHAL MENERT as well as powerhouse boss lady LILY FANGZ, two very influential artists in the Colorado music scene. If this group sounds like one that would resonate with you, check out the new album and come out to Ophelia’s next weekend! Ticket and event information can be found HERE.

Joining in on the action for the evening will be one of Denver’s most up and coming producers TOY BOX, the mandolin slaying wizard who’s taking the town by storm. Not only will he be playing SONIC BLOOM for the first time this summer, he’s had a pretty busy last couple months sharing the stage with names like MANIC FOCUSLATE NIGHT RADIOILLENIUM, and SEVEN LIONS, just to name a few. Toy Box’s melodic electronic concoctions will add some beautiful variety to the lineup, and word on the street is that he’ll be accompanied during his set by a few of the lovely ladies from FLOWHER VISUAL ART. If you want to check out his music, give a listen to his most recent EP “Short Stories,” released by the Bay Area based record label STREET RITUAL.

Last but not least, starting the night off right will be TRUE SCHOOL, another young producer with a really groovy GRAMATIK like vibe. I honestly hadn’t heard of him before seeing his name on this bill, but the second I heard his music I thought to myself “Holy shit, this guy is good.” Don’t sleep on your chance to see this hidden local gem of an artist. Just take one listen to his work and I guarantee you’ll hooked.
